Throughout the year junior golfers take part in competitions across Scotland with the leading Order of Merit players qualifying for the Stephen Gallacher Foundation ‘Race to Dunbar’ finals over the links course at Dunbar. Winds approaching 40 mph made for very testing conditions for the young players with Kilspindie’s Aaron Hall and James Wood, Bathgate coming out on top.
Aaron Hall, who is a member of the Scotland’s Golf Coast team currently in South Carolina for the Watson Cup, was one of three scratch players in the field of 54 players. With a score of 73, 2 under the CSS on the day he won the scratch competition by a shot from Gullane’s Joseph Cookson. Craigmillar Park’s Conor O’Toole a further shot behind.
James Wood playing off a handicap of nine headed the handicap table with a net 71, winning by three shots from Cambuslang’s Joseph Kelly with Fraser Wanstall, Royal Burgess, Fergus Brown, Gullane and Samuel Mukherjee, Loretto all one shot behind. With Stephen Gallacher’s golfing career starting at Bathgate and the strong connections he still has with the club it was particularly rewarding for Stephen to witness James’s success.
Top girl in the scratch section was Grace Crawford, Gullane and Ellie Ferguson, Craigmillar Park, was the leading girl in the handicap event.
The aims of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation are to encourage and develop junior golfers. To help them be better people by teaching them the disciplines, control and honesty required, while still enjoying the game and promoting a healthy lifestyle. From juniors just starting the game through to helping ones who hope to make a profession out of the game. We are going to provide support to golf clubs with both time and equipment, that will help develop existing junior membership and to provide them with a insight and understanding to the game and help them to maximise their potential.
